Year 2 Miss Townsend

Welcome to Year 2. Literacy and Numeracy usually take place in the mornings. Afternoons are devoted to a much broader and diverse curriculum; Science and ICT lessons are taught alongside History, Geography, PE, Art, DT, PHSE, Music, French and Religious Education. Most of these subjects are taught in blocks and children are asked to bring in things on a Monday morning to support the teaching and learning of the current topic. Children have indoor PE sessions on Wednesday and an outside games session on a Thursday afternoon. If we have been really good all week we are rewarded with Golden Time. This is our favourite time of the week as we can choose to play in the Home Corner, with the Train Track, make models with the lego and go on teh computer. In June we are lucky enough to go on a school visit to the seaside. We visit Clevedon Pier, Clevedon Beach and the museum at Weston.

In art we looked at some of the work of a famous artist called Van Gogh. In particular we looked at a painting of some sunflowers. We used this painting to inspire our own artwork of flowers where we used paint to create the background and pastels to draw the flowers. Have a look at the photos; we think we might be as famous as Van Gogh himself one day!

ICT WEEK:We had a very exciting week thinking about The Gingerbread Man story. We brought this story to life using some very snazzy technology! First we innovated the story in groups by changing the characters and the settings to create our own version. Then we made floor mats with the journey the Gingerbread Man took and used these to move a programmable robot called a ‘BeeBot’ around the mat while retelling the story “Run, run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me, I’m the BeeBot Man!” We also made puppets of the new characters in our stories and backdrops with props to create the settings.  Then we used something called a digi blue camera and a laptop to film our stories. Have a look at the photographs to find out more. Finally we used some video conferencing equipment to tell the story of The Gingerbread Man to a class at another school in Bristol.

DRAMA WORKSHOP: This was an exciting morning spent bringing events from the Great fire Of London to life.  Children acted out various stages of the day the fire started, and learnt several rhymes from the time .
