Year 4 is a great place to be! We have great topics, two trips and a lot of sport!
On Thursdays during Terms 1 and 2 we go swimming, on Mondays we have indoor PE and on Thursday we have outside games. Remember to bring your kit!
We are lucky enough to go on two trips this year. In September we visit the 'Home Farm' at Farrington Gurney - this will enhance the children's science curriculum and their learning about habitats and food sources and in March we have go to Steam World to experience 'a day in the life of an evacuee' as part of our World War Two topic.
We have just started reading some stories that are either set in imaginary worlds or contain imaginary creatures. We have let our imaginations wild and created our own fantasy worlds. We are learning ways to make our writing exciting for our readers and have learned how to use similes. We have written descriptions of characters and settings

Our focus in Science for Term 3 is Keeping Warm. We already investigated the best material for keeping an ice cube cold. Talk to us to see if we can explain why tin foil was not very good at this job! We are trying to build up our knowledge of materials that are good insulators (they don’t allow heat or cold to pass through) and their opposites – conductors (they do let heat and cold pass through). We can record our ideas on the display in our classroom.

Movies about the life of Henry VIII - The children worked in teams of 5 all week to create the script, scenery, and puppets. They then worked with an adult to produce the final movie. We used the Digital Blue cameras. The week was full of challenges, mainly of a technical nature and everyone learnt a lot about the value of saving our work as we went along. The class all loved doing their movies and hope you enjoy watching them.

Cross-Phase work with W1 – a highlight for many of the children was getting the chance to work with our year 1 friends. Children in Year 1 had designed a Wanted poster for some of the naughtier fairy tale characters. They then worked in pairs in the Learning Lab to produce the poster using MS Word. The finished posters were of a very high quality and the collaboration between year groups was considered a success by all. |

Blobs – a teacher from one of the local secondary schools came to Longwell Green to trial his version of the popular dance mats. Children each had four ‘blobs’; one of each colour – red, yellow, blue and green. Using some very cool music we worked our way through various levels, learning a new type of move at each level. We were exhausted!
