Stone Farm 20th – 23rd July 2009

Stone Farm Monday 20th July 2009

Greetings from Stone Farm.  Year 6 have arrived safely and already fallen for the charms of the furry and feathered residents.  They have spent their first evening introducing themselves to the guinea pigs, chickens, rabbits, goats, alpacas, donkey, pony and owls and Diesel the energetic sheepdog. The staff will be searching suitcases for stowaways on Thursday!!
We all enjoyed a reflective time around the camp fire before preparing for a good night's sleep.

Tuesday! Wet, wet, wet yet fun, fun, fun!

Obviously Devon has it's own monsoon season that nobody told us about!  At least the children came prepared.
Our guides arrived and let us know what we'd need to survive the day.  They also informed us that plan b would come into operation.  So we headed to Lydford Gorge and a walk to the waterfall through the trees.
The rain still came down heavily and visibility was poor so we headed to the High Moor Visitor Centre to dry off and learn more about the moor.
Following lunch on the coach the weather started to clear so we set off for a shorter amble around Vixen Tor.  Our guides kept us safe and informed and the children enjoyed splashing through the  puddles. We even saw the sun peak through the clouds.  Despite the damp start the children thoroughly enjoyed their adventure.
Nobody has ever seen potatoes as big as the ones we were served at dinner.  Must be all the rain they have down here.  Just as well there are so many farm jobs to do and exercise to be had.
Year 6 Christmas List.
1. An alpaca or two.
2. A hutch full of guinea pigs.
3.  Free range chickens.(As pets not nuggets)
4.  A energetic dog called Diesel who never tires of playing fetch.
5.  A weekend at Stone Farm.

Eden

Our day at Eden and Stone Farm has talent.

Our morning was spent exploring the Mediterranean biome, the children using all their senses as they walked around spotting familiar and unfamiliar plants.  It would appear some groups even discovered a giant bee in the grounds outside the biomes on their way in. 'Lost.  Us? Never,' came the reply.

The afternoon started with a workshop in the education centre.  The children were asked to help plan a rainforest survival program being planned for television.  They entered the heat and humidity of the tropical biome searching for plants that could help provide food, water and survival.  Once over the shock of the heat, they got stuck into their task and found a huge range of useful plants.  Everybody had a great time and appreciated they live in our cold wet climate and appreciate the variety it offers.

On the way out, Mrs English did a sterling job of getting 54 children through the Eden megastore in just 20 minutes. This must be a new record.

The evening brought the grand finale of our trip, the talent contest, an event some had been preparing for for the last four weeks.  The evening proves that even at this stage in their time at Longwell Green, the children still have the capacity to surprise us.  We witnessed a wide variety of acts from comedians and dancers to monologues and newsreaders.  The standard was very high and the top acts will be performing at the leavers service on Friday morning.

One more night of sleep before we return home tired, well fed and full with memories.
