Hooke Court - September 2010
News from the first ever Longwell Green Year 5 residential at Hooke Court
We’re off and running. Day 1 saw the children involved in a series of team-building challenges set to develop their communication skills and co-operative skills and test their resilience and desire to succeed. The children worked together to get their team across a crocopig and alligacow infested swamp and worked hard to use guttering and their initiative to transport a cricket ball to a designated target. As the afternoon wore on the children learned the best way to utilise the skills of their team. Other challenges managed to develop their non-verbal communication skills although the children admitted this was the most difficult part of the afternoon.
It was brilliant to see the children use the skills they’d developed in the afternoon to work together during the Night Line activity. The children were blindfolded and asked to trust each other and lead their team around a series of obstacles by carefully passing on messages to those behind them about direction and hazards on the floor. It was great to see both teams skilfully manoeuvre their way around the final challenge following a rope tied amongst the trees.
It’s the River walk on Thursday, a 5 mile walk tracing the river around the beautiful Dorset countryside. Let’s hope the children have a good night’s sleep and have the energy to see the task through and learn everything they’ll need to know about rivers.
Everyone is loving being at Hooke Court and having a great time, making new friends, developing existing friendships and leaning important lessons along the way.
Hooke Tweets
As with year 6 at Stone Farm we thought we’d challenge the children to sum up their day in a tweet style bulletin. Here is a selection.
Today was great. We went on a river study. Of course all the water was in my wellies. We walked up and down hills. We went into the river and my boots got stuck! We measured the current.

Today was an amazing day. We all investigated different rivers. We all went into a river because we were measuring the size of the river and the speed of the river by dropping a pine cone into water.
