Hanham cross country series

During the past few weeks 13 year 6s, Emily, Rhianne, Lucy, Tia, Sophie C, Katie, Lewis, George H, Aaron, Jamie, George W and Kadeem took part in the Hanham cross country series. This comprised of the Hanham High Horror course, Beacon Rise Bruiser and The Park Pulveriser.

The first race was at Hanham High. The Longwell Green Girls team finished in a respectable fifth place. Meanwhile the boys team were showing everyone how it’s done by whitewashing the opposition.  5 out of 6 runners finished in the top 10, including Lewis winning the event with George H finishing third.

The second race was at Beacon Rise. This time the girls finished sixth but yet again the boy’s team finished first way ahead of the other schools. Yet again Lewis won the event with this time Aaron in third.

The final race was at The Park. The Longwell Green girl’s team finished sixth and guess what, yet again the boys team came first. With Lewis winning the event and George H finishing third.

Now time for the awards. Overall during the 3 races the girls finished sixth. However the boys team came first overall winning a trophy for their excellent efforts. Individual awards were handed out to Lewis for finishing fist out of 44 runners, George H coming second and Aaron coming third.

Another trophy for Longwell Green School.

Girls Cricket Tournament

On Friday 18th June the Y6 girl’s kwik cricket team (Emily, Evie.D, Evie.B, Katie, Jess.F, Natalie, Chloe.C, Sophie.C, Sophie.E.B, and Jess H) made their way to Stroud for the County Finals.

When they arrived they found out that they would be playing their first game against Bream from Gloucester who we beat with the score of 279 to 220.

After our first game we then quickly moved on to our next game against Almondsbury who we also beat. When we finished that game we then played Longley who we sadly lost too, but this didn’t matter as we already knew that we had automatically qualified into the semi finals as we had won our first two games.  In fact we won our group.

In the semi final we beat Westbury on Trym quite convincingly.

So finally we reached our last game, the final, against Hempstead who we unfortunately lost to with the score of 234 – 263. It was really close until the last two overs when Hempstead ran away with the game with some outstanding batting.  We each got a medal for getting that far and a certificate. We congratulated Hempstead and left with our heads held high in pride. But although this happened our journey may still not be up yet as if anyone drops out we will go through in their place!!!!

The very next day, Saturday 19th June, 10 of the girl’s cricket club (Emily, Evie.D, Natalie, Jess.F, Katie, Evie.B, Rhiain, Rhainna, Libby and Chloe.C) went to Yate for the Festival of Youth Sport cricket competition. We all arrived in hope that we would win this time. First all of the children attending the festival did a parade round the race track there. Then Vicky, who came to our school earlier in the year, talked through the rules with us. Straight after that we quickly moved on to our first game against St. Mary’s who we beat. Shortly after we started to play our second game against Cadbury Heath which we also beat. We knew after this we qualified to the final. In the final we played against Hanham Abbots, who we also beat, and this meant that we had won the overall competition!!!!   Once again Longwell Green girl’s cricket team proved they are the best in South Glos.

Girls Cricket Tournament

On the 26th May 2010 sixteen of the year six girls travelled to the Downend cricket club for a kwik cricket tournament. When we arrived we were put in to two teams of eight team A and team B.

The first game that team A played was against Hanham Abbots Primary school. Hanham Abbots batted first and they were really good but then team A batted and upped their game and came through with a win of 235 to Hanham Abbots and 236 to Longwell green team A. It was very unfortunate because the second game team A played was against our own school we had to play against team B. Team A took a whopping win of 280 to 207. The last and final game team a played was against a tough school it was Christ Church but yet again team A won with a score of 241 to 243.

Team B’s first game was against Christ Church primary. Christ Church are a very hard school to try and beat, team B tried their absolute hardest but Christ Church still won with a score of 214 to Longwell green team B and 266 to Christ Church. Also unfortunately had to play Longwell green team A but guess what team A won with 280 to 207. The last and final game they played was against Hanham Abbots and again team B tried their absolute hardest but maybe again their hardest wasn’t enough. The scores were 228 to 258.

The overall scores were in 4th place was Longwell green team B with an overall score of 9. In 3rd place was Christ Church with an overall score of 11. In 2nd place was Hanham Abbots with a score of 13. And in a whopping 1st place was Longwell green team A with an overall score of 15.  Team A came 1st they now have to travel to Stroud on the 18th of June 2010 to take part in the kwik cricket tournament.

FOOTBALL REPORTS BY GEORGE F6

Monday 22/3/10   St Annes vs Longwell Green

Our final match of the season.  St Annes have a reputation for playing good football and did not disappoint, and are high in the league, they also have two big midfield players. First half was a lot of midfield work with one half chance falling to either side. Second half continued much the same as the first half, with neither side giving anything away, until good approach work from Longwell breaking away down the right hand side, good ball delivered into goalmouth, ball headed away, clumsy tackle from St Annes free kick awarded in good shooting position just outside the penalty area. Wonderfully struck free kick (George H) low on ground to hit back of the net through packed goalmouth. Longwell then sustained eight minutes of pressure from St Annes but good goal keeping and defensive play enabled Longwell to come away with a much deserved 1-0 win.

Friday 19/3/10    Longwell Green vs Barrs Court

First half was end to end, with Barrs Court having the advantage of the slope, Longwell conceded two goals, first was a defensive error, the second was probably due to wet goalmouth area. But after half time team talk, which involved tightening the defensive back line, the Longwell forwards peppered the Barrs Court goal with seven shots, hitting the goalmouth upright once, the crossbar twice and scoring twice (Lewis and Aaron), to earn a much deserved draw, and come away with a lot of confidence.
