PSHE and RSHE
PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education)
As a school, we deliver a nationally recognised, comprehensive Programme for PSHE in a spiral (themes are re-visited) and progressive scheme, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others. The scheme we use is called Jigsaw and through this, we have a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, as well as exploring mindfulness emotional awareness, concentration and focus.
How we are as people underpins all we do at Longwell Green. We have our series of values that can be seen and explored here.
As well as the explicit weekly PSHE lessons, we interweave the exploration of PSHE themes through much of what we do, through English and the exploration of age appropriate challenging themes that can be safely explored through novels, to the forgiveness shown by a historical figure and more.
Our overarching aims to teach every child value themselves and their uniqueness, value others for this also and to know that they can make a difference in the world, and this flows through all we do.
We make links at local, national and world level to remind children of the world we live in now and the world they will inhabit as adults in the future. We may do this through inviting external visitors to discuss PSHE issues as appropriate, e.g. road safety, nutrition, stranger danger, racism, homelessness, poverty, charity work and more.
At Longwell Green we want every child to be happy and to grow to believe in themselves and know how to succeed as they move forwards. We acknowledge that the world is not always perfect and we can at times: suffer disappointment, fall out with our friends, need to know that there are dangers on the internet and dangers crossing a road and so much more, but we aim to equip each child with the confidence and skills to succeed in all situations using these transferable life skills
RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education)
As of September 2020, a change in legislation on relationships, sex and health education (RSHE) for schools came into effect.
“Today’s children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world and living their lives seamlessly on and offline. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. In this environment, children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way.”
Taken form the RSHE Government guidance.
All schools were required to consult with parents and carers about their RSHE curriculum. At Longwell Green, we consulted in July 2020. Details of our policy and curriculum can be found below and also here: If you are a parent or carer at and you have any questions about our approach to RSHE, please do get in touch via the usual channels.
Our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education) policy, including RSHE (Relationships, Sex, Health Education) can be found here.
RSHE is not an isolated programme, but a part of the schools overall PSHE programme. When people think about RSHE the S is the part that everyone focuses on, but overwhelmingly, our focus is more about how to successfully respect yourself, stay safe, look after yourself physically and emotionally and support others to look after themselves physically and emotionally. This is taught of course at an age appropriate way.
Prior to any RSHE lessons, parents and carers will be invited to join a meeting with the class teacher/s who will share in more detail the content of the lessons and you will have a chance to ask questions here.
When thinking about RSHE, PSHE and all that we do at Longwell Green, we look forwards to helping your child to truly value themselves as a unique individual with shared as well as personal to them interests and thoughts, to respect others as unique also, and to give your child the tools to work to make the world an even better place.
