At Longwell Green, children explore their bodies through movement, apparatus, equipment and each other. They build a knowledge of tactics to use in game scenarios and adapt them accordingly. Children also learn to work individually and collaboratively to improve performances, whilst always reflecting. At Longwell Green, we value active, sustainable travel to and from school through our partnership with Modeshift Stars.

Sports Days

At Longwell Green, we hold two whole school sports day events:

Competitive Sports Day: the children trial for a variety of athletic based events in their classes and compete against other finalists to achieve 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each event in each year group.

Sport For All: all children participate in their house teams in a wide variety of sports to earn points which contribute to the end of year House Cup winners!

SWIFT Sports

As teacher PPA cover, SWIFT Sports deliver our progressive Val Sabin PE curriculum to Years 1-6. Partnered with the SWIFT Sports Coaching PE expertise and the Val Sabin plans, high quality PE provision is delivered. SWIFT also deliver tailored PE intervention provision for groups which have been identified by class teachers. These interventions have specific outcomes based on the children involved.

Additionally, the SWIFT Sports coaches provide a range of extra-curricular activities which target the specific skills that the children have been developing within their PE lessons.

Swimming

Children in Years 5 and 6 travel to Longwell Green Leisure Centre each year to develop key swimming skills. During their swimming lessons, the children will learn and improve a variety of strokes to achieve their 25m badge. Those who have achieved this already, are able to learn key lifesaving skills. As a school, we value the importance of this life skill.

Competitions, South Gloucestershire and CSET Partnership

Within school, we offer a wide range of extra-curricular competitions within House Teams (teams the children are assigned when they begin school). These form part of their PE lessons at the end of each term. Each competition focuses on different skills or sports that have been practised in PE lessons. Additionally, we partner with South Gloucestershire PE Association and CEST to participate in high quality, external competitions.

School Games

Longwell Green are proud to announce that we have achieved the School Games Gold Award. This is a nationally recognised award for schools and their PE provision. It is externally moderated along with our School Games Officer. We have achieved this by following these key criteria:

1) Maintaining and growing our school’s engagement in the School Games and our delivery of 60 active minutes for every child. We are delivering 30 active minutes for 30% of our school population and are tracking their 30 minutes take up (or not) beyond school.

2) Creating positive experiences to ensure physical activity and competition provision is designed to reflect the motivation, competence and confidence of our young people and has a clear intent.

3) A clear focus on particular transition points (Yr.3 and Yr.7/8 as well as those in 3 tier systems) and how secondary schools are engaging in the School Games.

4) Creating positive experiences that support the character development of young people.

5) Advocated to key stakeholders how the School Games makes a meaningful difference to the lives of children and young people, including engaging and educating their parents.
