History

At Longwell Green, we aim to inspire children to become curious and critical historical thinkers who enjoy learning and building up a richer and deeper understanding of the past.  Children will know and understand the history of Britain from the earliest times to present day.  This includes an appreciation of the sacrifices people have made to shape this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world.  By deepening and developing their knowledge of world history, the children will obtain a clearer sense of themselves, their local community as well as the wider world. 

Children will be taught how to interpret the past using primary and secondary sources.  They will be   critical of historical evidence and they will consider whether interpretations are based on fact, fiction or opinion.  They will recognise that not everyone shares the same views and feelings and to be both discerning and respectful of different historical viewpoints.  They will understand chronology and interpret the past using concepts such as change and continuity, similarity and differences, cause and consequence and significance to build an overview of the past.

The learning and enjoyment of history will be further supported by outside workshops, WOW days, school trips and special assemblies to commemorate important historical events. 

Children will learn specific vocabulary relating to the historical period they are studying and be able to communicate their historical findings in a variety of ways, through discussion, drawing pictures, drama and role-play, making models, writing and using ICT.
