Our School Day
Entering the school.
To avoid overcrowding, we make use of two different entrance points for the start of the day.
School is staggered by 5 minutes for Key stage one and Reception and Key stage two for the same reason and also to allow parents time if they have multiple drop off and pick ups to make.
| Green gates (entering the playground) | Hall ramp | |
|---|---|---|
| 8.40 – 3.10 | Year 5 and Year 6 | Year 3 and Year 4 |
| 8.45 – 3.15 | Reception and Year 1 | Year 2 |
Dropping off your child at school
When children start school in September, parents accompany children coming into Reception class. For other year groups, children come into school by themselves through the locations described above. This helps with developing independent skills, reduces congestion and helps lessen the risk of strangers being around school. The speedier you make the drop off, the more smoothly it will go. A member of senior staff and the Family Link Adviser are at the gate to greet the children each morning.
Communication
If something needs to be communicated, please use the office if it is something formal (telephone or email if you are unable to attend in person), or use dojo if it something informal. Note that staff will not be able to check dojo while they are teaching for obvious reasons, so please ensure any information is shared in a timely manner.
Meeting your child at the end of the day
All children are collected in the playground outside the exit doors through which the children leave. Again, we request that parents stay in the playground and do not go into school for the reasons given above. Parents who do need to come into school must come via the front entrance. Please sign in and collect a visitor’s badge. We appreciate your support.
School Times
The times of the school day are as follows:
Morning Play time
KS1: 10.25 – 10.40
KS2: 10.45 -11.00
Lunch time
FS/KS1: 12.00 – 1.00
KS2: 12.00 -1.00
Afternoon Play time
KS1: 2.25 -2.35
Home time 3.10 for Key Stage 2 and 3.15 for Key Stage 1 and Reception.
Please be on time, the start of the day is very important and helps your child feel settled and understand the day. Learning starts promptly and even being 5 minutes late will impact your child’s day. 5 minutes late a day equates to 25 minutes lost each week. 10 minutes is almost an hour lost a week. Thank you all parents who work hard to be prompt to help us best help your child.
Attendance
Regular and punctual attendance is encouraged so that children gain fully from all the educational opportunities available to them at Longwell Green School. Once a pattern of good attendance is made it should stay with them throughout their school life and beyond. See a complete copy of the Attendance Policy and related documents here.
Practice
- School Policy is based on guidance from the Department of Education. Schools cannot authorise holidays in term time. The Headteacher can authorise absence for ‘exceptional circumstances’ only; in authorising absence the Headteacher will look at the request on a case by case basis. All absences from school are disruptive and children can miss important learning. Any requests for absence may be made using a form obtained at the office or from the https://www.longwellgreenprimaryschool.co.uk/policies/of this website.
- Illness – the office should be contacted when a child is first unwell (between 8.30am and 9.00 am). If school is not informed by 9.30 the office will telephone parents or carers to ask for the reason for the absence.
- Medical Appointments – routine medical/dental appointments should be made after school or during holidays whenever possible. The school monitors attendance each term; the Headteacher and Education Welfare Officer regularly monitors children whose attendance falls below 95%.The school will work with parents and carers to ensure attendance matters are addressed.
- Punctuality – the school registers close at 9.00. If a child is persistently late the Headteacher will be notified who will then discuss this with the parents or carers. The Local Authority Education Welfare Officer may also support the family with these matters.
